Celebration of Dr. Marion Jackson, August 17
SAT AUG 17 9am-noon MARION DAY — a celebration to honor the life of Dr. Marion Jackson (ISU Professor Emeritus & editor of The Natural Heritage of Indiana) at Jackson-Schnyder Nature Preserve in Vigo County at 1100 W. Concannon Ave, West Terre Haute, IN 47885 **
The Ouabache Land Conservancy (a 501(c)3 non-profit land trust) invites everyone to Marion Day held at Jackson-Schnyder Nature Preserve, west of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. No reservations are required for this family friendly event.
The morning will begin with a moment of silence in the prairie, followed by a hike led by Amber Slaughterbeck, Invasive Species Regional Specialist. Ten species of grasses and sedges, including Big and Little Bluestem, Indian Grass and Prairie Dropseed; and 38 species of native forbs including Wild Quinine, Dense Blazing Star, Mountain Mint, Wild Senna, Compass Plant, and Rattlesnake Master were drilled into this former soybean field in June 2009.
Slaughterbeck will discuss recommended practices for inviting pollinators to your property and the control of invasive species invaders. At 11:00 a.m. make native seed bombs out of clay to toss into our prairie. Water bottles will be provided for participants and water will be onsite. Bring your work gloves to help us clean trash from the stream or try your hand at removing invasive species from our preserve.
** Directions: To get to the Jackson-Schnyder Nature Preserve, take Hwy 150 to St. Mary’s Ave and turn west, drive past the St. Mary-of-the-Woods College main entrance, continue west and turn left on Bloomtown Road, go under the railroad and turn right on Concannon Ave. Past the bridge is the roadside entrance (on the right) to the Preserve.
