Hike Morgan-Monroe State Forest October 15

Morgan-Monroe State Forest: Low Gap Trail, Sweedy Hollow Nature Preserve, Morgan County, Indiana
Leaders: John Bacone, IDNR Division of Nature Preserves
Trail Conditions: Somewhat rugged; approx. 3 miles long.
What To See: This portion of the Low Gap Trail goes through Sweedy Hollow Nature Preserve, a 155 acre tract containing high quality mesic, dry-mesic, and dry upland forest, a bit of mesic floodplain forest, and an interesting area of sandstone cliffs and overhangs. This preserve, imbedded within Morgan-Monroe State Forest, provides habitat for numerous species of forest interior birds.
Directions: Morgan-Monroe State Forest lies just east of State Road 37, about 5 miles south of Martinsville. From State Road 37 turn east onto County Road 525 East/Pine Blvd (a highway sign for the Forest occurs on SR 37 at this junction). Travel about 1/2 mile to join the Main Forest Road, on the latter continuing approx. 4 1/2 miles to the Low Gap Trailhead and parking lot. The lot is on the south (right) side of the road, just past the Wallace Shelter House and junction with N. Beanblossom Road. Meet at 10 am.
